Pacific Coast Highway

I think we are chaning our route a little. Spending less time in Las Vegas so we can drive up the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway. Has anyone does this before? Suggestions of towns to stay in?

Scott and I met tonight to go over our route. If you can read the attached I will be impressed. Bascially we have decided to drive more hours at the begining (8-9 per day) and then relax in AZ and Las Vegas. We hope to stay at the famous Wigwam Hotel in Holbrook, AZ if they accept pups. It was featured in the movie Cars and I think it also made an apperance in Transamerica or some indie movie like that.

Friends along the way....

POSTED BY ANDY

So I am not the only one who has left ole Georgia for the West. Rockstar Jenny (of Charmschool and the Eyes) has just moved to Flagstaff. Flagstaff is really near our tentative route, so maybe we will have to catch a drink and dinner with her. She likes it out there.

Now I am wondering if there are other friends along the way that I am forgetting.....

Danny is in Dallas but we are not going that far south. Kenny is in orange county I think (again much further south than we are going). Anyone else?

I am planning, packing, freaking out. When you take a job with the federal government (even on a temp basis) as I am you have to fill out so much information for background checks to get your security clearance. It is like the bible: You have to re-produce you whole history of who begot who.... and who begot who.... I think they are calling like 8 of my friends to make sure I am an upstanding citizen.

The Call of the West

Scott here again. This post actually has little to do with our trip, but I think we both hear The Call of The West

By the way, this performance was from the 688 club in Atlanta, circa 1982

I think I will take an oppurtunity to yell into the desert. It'll do me good.

Whoa, Nelly!

Holy Cow, I just found out the Cadillac Ranch is on the way! Woo Hoo! (this is Scott by the way. I'm not sure Andy would get as excited about a row of Cadillacs sticking out the ground, but maybe!) Here's the Boss singing about it:

Follow That Naked...What?

So one might ask where we got the title for our travel blog. Of course, it was the source of Scott's wit who remembers every movie and music reference ever. He is like an encyclopedia.

Scott and I are both excited to see the desert as have never seen one before. In fact, I am conviced that deserts only exists in movies. This trip may prove me wrong.

So in The Doors movie when they are out in the desert Jim Morrison sees an inidan and follows him through caves and such. Scott correct me if I am wrong but Jim thinks this is the same indian that he saw die when he was a child on a road trip through the desert with his parents. The indian is clothed most of the time but at some point in the movie Jim sees him walking through his apartment in a loin cloth and follows him.

So there you go: We will be looking for naked indians in the desert.

Here is one seen with the Jim and the indian.

Wayne's World II also has a similar scene (Scott's knowledge again), though the only version I could find is in french. ;)

Scott's remarks pt.1

Hey everyone, This is Scott, the other speaking traveler on this voyage. I'm pretty excited about this trip. I've been wanting to go to California since at least middle school. It's actually one of my goals before I die, ala The Bucket List, to see the Pacific Ocean. I confess no particular attraction to San Francisco, but EVERYONE I know who's been loved it. My real interest lies with the voyage itself, through the so called "flyover states". I'm 40 years old, and I've yet to cross the Mississippi River! Also, to be honest, I'm a little tired of the congestion of Atlanta lately. My big wish is to stand in the desert, beside a road that goes straight to the horizon, and see a tumble weed go by, like the picture of Forrest (but without the cult following me).

Tentative Route

Here is our tentative route (in progress).

Been out there? Suggestion?

Desitnation Palo Alto

Desitnation Palo Alto

Well kids, yes I am heading to San Francisco... or at least a suburb of it about 40 mins south. This place seems way to posh for me! Houses are tres cher (ave 1.6 millon) Really? Come on?! And the job I am getting seems really low key compared to my current position. Not to mention to my east will be the San Francisco Bay and to my right the Pacific Ocean? The city only has a population of 61K.

oh la la. Come visit me so I won't be so lonley.

Andy, Travel Nurse
POSTED BY ANDY:

So, on or around July 13th, 2008 Andy and Scott will travel from Atlanta, GA to Palo Alto, CA (a southern suburb of San Francisco).

Andy is starting a new job there as a Travel Nurse. Scott is coming along for the ride. Andy is very greatful to have a travel companion that knows how to drive a manual transmission.

Oscar and Oliver (two boston terriers) are also coming along for the ride. This blog document our plans and trip. Advice and suggestions welcomed! We are just mapping out the plans now.

Scott will return by plane in late July. Andy will be in ole Cali until at least October.
