Pacific Coast Highway

I think we are chaning our route a little. Spending less time in Las Vegas so we can drive up the coast on the Pacific Coast Highway. Has anyone does this before? Suggestions of towns to stay in?

I've covered most of the coastal highway on two different trips - once from San Fran down to Big Sur National Forest, and one other time from San Luis Obispo down to Los Angeles. It's a really cool drive, particularly the northern part. Santa Cruz was really cool - I'd recommend spending a night there. Monterey is nice as well, but a bit pricey. If you're looking for something closer to Los Angeles and want something a little out-of-the-ordinary, check out Solvang. It's a German-style village just north of Santa Barbara.

PCH is rockin.. done it lots esp the trip between LA and Santa Barbara.. Solvang is actually the gateway to wine country ala Sideways. May be too much to try and do in a day (really need at least 4 days to hit all the vineyards proper :). I really like Big Sur, Caramel, and Santa Cruz. Hearst Castle is awesome side jaunt. xoxo, T
